The artist, Patrick Dougherty, and volunteers traveled to Allen County, Kentucky to harvest saplings. The preferred trees were flexible, varied in diameter, and upwards of 16 feet tall. Regionally, those were poplar and red maple.

The volunteers removed leaves from the saplings in order to provide an optimal building material to sculpt the final product.
CONSTRUCTION
Dougherty and volunteers began by setting the foundation, using an auger to dig post holes in the ground. Construction continued with weaving saplings in the form designed by Dougherty.
